Jennifer Byrne Presents: Our wonderful, wonderful public broadcaster throws us a bone.
The First Tuesday Book Club and Jennifer Byrne presents are the only sensible discussion of books in Australia on mainstream TV. The fact they devoted a whole program to graphic novels and included Australian peeps is pretty darn good I reckon. You can watch it here for another 6 days.
Nicki Greenberg – does she ever stop?
Lawyer by day, cartoonist by whenever she gets the time and full time mum.
If you thought an epic adaptation of Hamlet wasn’t enough then check out her latest children’s book, Monkey Red Monkey Blue. You can also read a Hamlet review from the SMH by Cefn Ridout here.
Kevin Patrick – he be the man with the knowledge.
I have to admit that I don’t know as much as I would like about the history of comics and cartooning in Australia. But luckily for me there is Kevin Patrick. There have been a couple of things that have popped up on his blog lately to fill in the gaps in my knowledge. Unfortunately one of them is in the form of a eulogy. Go read his blog and i highly recommend The Invisible Medium - comic studies in Australia and RIP – Reg Pitt
J Marc Schmidt – a beautiful loser?
J Marc is a thoughtful writer on all things pop cultural and I recommend you read his pieces with an inquisitive mind. You should also check out his great comics.
Not only is his and Jason Franks' book ‘The Sixsmiths’ hitting the shelves as we speak but at his blog J Marc is musing on the beautiful losers that seem to proliferate in ‘literary’ graphic novels. Well worth a read.
Jeannie Baker – sequential artist on display at Melbourne Museum.
When not podcasting and occasionally blogging my other identity is as an employee at Melbourne Museum. Currently on display (til Feb 13 2011) is the art of Jeannie Baker. Mirror is silent graphic story telling at it’s best. I was mightily impressed when I read the book but seeing the original art on display is something else all together.
Telling parallel and intersecting stories of two families in Australia and Morocco Jeannie shows just how connected we all are. Check out the exhibition, marvel in the details of the collages and grab a copy of the book. It's touring around the country during 2011.
Nicola Scott: popping up on the Panel Borders podcast
Nicola Scott was one of our favourite guests on TheComicSpot this year. She has a great comic artist origin story and tackles corporate superhero art with thoughtfulness and skill. Her Wonder Woman is divine and best of all lacking in gratuitous arse and breast shots that most other artists seem addicted to when depicting female characters in that realm.
She speaks to Alex Fitch of the fantastic London based podcast Panel Borders about her approach. A good listen.
Posemaniacs. – for drawing stuff good.
I’m not a great drawer. I don’t practice enough and apart from a short CAE course have never had any direction. But tools like these at posemaniacs seem like they would be really useful for not just beginners like me but all skill levels.
Till next time
JR
