In the mail.

A couple of books arrived in the post lately.

First there was Celadore from Caanan Grall - you can listen to our chat with Caanan here. I'd read chunks of it online for free but not the whole work. Great to finally get it in my hands and get it all in one hit. A great read. And congrats to Caanan on his recent Eisner Award nomination for best digital comics for Max Overacts.

Celadore: a ripping yarn from Caanan Grall

I also received Darkest Day in the post. This is an anthology of comics put together to raise money for the Red Cross appeal to help those impacted by the Christchurch earthquake. You can do your bit as a reader and order a copy from Funtime right here.

A range of NZ and Australain cartoonists chip in to do their bit.

Keep going round the www

Award winning cartoonist Anton Emdin provides a fantastic tutorial on inking. All your questions answered right here.

Have you checked out the comics and drawings of Michael Fakaris? No! Well get with the clicky.

How about some Guru Bumpin with Hutcho?

Very much looking forward to more Radio as Paper on the way:

Added to my list (way too long by the way) of people i haven't spoken to but must is Doug Holgate; got to have him on soon.

And finally... at the newly revamped (for the better) Comics Journal website there is a great interview with Ivan Brunetti. Well worth your time.

Montage and comics. What It Was at Readings.

If you were lucky enough to be in attendance at Readings in Carlton last week you were witness to Bernard Caleo and Michael Camilleri investigating and dissecting, NAY, splicing through the topic of montage and/in comics.

It was a genuinely illuminating rumination on the poetics of comics and the way montage does and does not work in the comics language.

Bernard will no doubt blog about it and Michael has put some notes, links and info on montage used during the evening on his site here. Luckily for us he has included his silent comic The Two Podlokovs presented at the end of the evening which left the audience in a state of awe, me included.

First panel of The Two Podlokovs.

I was lucky enough to be making Bernard and Michael coffee as they toiled
on the pieces they produced for the evening. And toil they did and did that toil ever pay off.
Truly beautiful, instructive, interesting, engaging and provoking evening. If you've ever thought there's more to comics than who would win in a fight between Hulk and Superman then check out other evenings to follow under Bernard's WHAT IT IS banner happening throughout the year.

From BERNARDS WWW -

Next What It Is? evening at Readings Bookshop:
Featuring: kamishibai storytelling,
Mike Shuttleworth (Our Man in Angouleme), and Brenton McKenna, the author of the graphic novel 'Ubby's Underdogs', set in 1940s Broome!

309 Lygon Street, Carlton, Melbourne
8pm Monday 30 May 2011

Around the www in a few clicks.

Thought i'd share.

Filka posts some practice/progress pages. Not part of the graphic novel in progress but any way you look at it it's beautiful.

Last year the Abstract Comics anthology caught my eye and through it I discovered the blog Drawing Silence from Kiwi artist working under the name of DRAW.   There are some very intriguing works here that push the boundaries of what comics are. Here is a good place to start.

Bobby N catches Alternate Worlds pushing some local content. Well done to them and to Larry in paticular.

This Guh! strip for Jase Harper reminded me of another favourite read of 2010, Nate Neal's .The Sanctuary.

Mel Stringer has a new zine out and available for puchase. Back when I had money to buy some original art Mel was someone's I snapped up.

Maori Warrior + Pink Unicorns = Matt Emery.

For the latest episode of TheComicSpot featuring BMB, creator of Kranburn; and Tim McEwen talking about the Tides of Hope fundrasing comic put together by Supanova you can go here or subscribe to 3CR DIYArts on iTunes.

On the next edition of TheComicSpot on Thursday 14th April we'll be speaking to another Kiwi Ant Sang about his book Shaolin Burning. We might also have a couple of voices from Supanova Melbourne happening at the Showgrounds from 8-10 April.

I'l also be hunting down some more info on a Firedcat Comix thingo happening in Geelong. I'll get back to you on that one.
